The Millhouse Slane Wedding| Ellie & James
Every Wedding Photographer’s Dream
I arrived at The Millhouse in Slane Co. Meath in advance, as usual, to take test and still shots, check the lighting, and plan the day. This exceptional venue, situated on the banks of the River Boyne, is ideal for weddings with its enchanting Mill ceremony room and the Georgian Manor House. Surrounded by the natural beauty of trees and quaint outdoor settings, The Millhouse offers a wealth of opportunities for creating unforgettable wedding memories.
Embracing the Venue’s Essence
Despite the weather, which proved to be less of a concern, Ellie and James, along with their guests, fully embraced the venue’s unique charm. The weather contributed to the peaceful atmosphere, allowing for relaxed photos by the old Mill and the river, capturing the essence of this alternative wedding setting.
Capturing the Day from Every Angle
The drone footage provided an additional dimension to the wedding, capturing stunning aerial shots and video snippets that revealed the full beauty of Ellie and James’s special day.
Cherishing Candid Moments
The remainder of the evening was dedicated to documenting the joy of the bride and groom as they mingled with family and friends. It was an honour to witness and capture such sincere emotions and happiness. My personal favourite moments are those candid shots where I become almost invisible, moving among the guests to capture the genuine, heartfelt moments that define Ellie and James’s day.

Perfect Photography for Every Wedding Size: A Guide to Small and Large Celebrations
When planning your wedding, one of the most exciting decisions is choosing how you’ll capture the big day through photos. Whether you’re organising an intimate gathering or a grand celebration, your photography needs can vary significantly. If you’re in Ireland and seeking the perfect photographer to match your wedding size, this guide will help you understand the differences between photographing small versus large weddings.
Small Wedding Photography: The Art of Intimacy
Small weddings, also known as micro or intimate weddings, are all about celebrating with a close-knit group of loved ones. With fewer guests, your photographer can focus on capturing the personal, heartfelt moments that make your day unique. Here’s how to approach small wedding photography:
-
Personalised Touch
For small weddings, the connection between the couple and the photographer is key. You’ll want someone who can capture the intimate moments and subtle details that make your day special. A small wedding photographer often has the flexibility to get to know you and your guests better, allowing them to blend seamlessly into the background while capturing those candid, emotional shots.

-
Detailed Focus
With a smaller guest list, there’s more room to focus on the finer details. Natural wedding photography can shine here, capturing everything from the delicate details of your decor to the close-up shots of your personalised wedding favours. Small wedding photography packages often include more focus on these intimate details, ensuring that every aspect of your celebration is beautifully documented.
-
Flexibility and Creativity
Small weddings offer a great opportunity for creative freedom. Your photographer can experiment with different angles and settings, utilising the unique aspects of your venue to their fullest potential. Whether it’s a charming garden, a cosy indoor setting, or a stunning beach backdrop, the best wedding photographers will use their creativity to enhance the natural beauty of your small wedding.
-
Family and Friends
Capturing the essence of your closest friends and family members is a big part of intimate wedding photography. With fewer people to focus on, your photographer can take the time to get to know your guests and capture their reactions and interactions throughout the day. These personal touches make your wedding album feel warm and personal.
Large Wedding Photography: The Grandeur of Scale
Large weddings, with their grand scale and numerous guests, present a different set of challenges and opportunities for your photographer. Here’s how to approach large wedding photography:
-
Comprehensive Coverage
For a large wedding, comprehensive coverage is essential. This means having a photographer (or even a team of photographers) who can capture every significant moment, from the grand entrance to the lively reception. Large wedding photography often involves multiple angles and viewpoints to ensure that no moment goes unnoticed.

-
Organisation and Coordination
A well-organised approach is crucial for large weddings. The best wedding photographers will coordinate with your planner and venue to ensure that they capture the key moments while managing the logistics of a big crowd. This includes coordinating group shots, ensuring everyone is in place, and being aware of the timing of various events throughout the day.
-
Dynamic Shots
With so many people and activities, your photographer will need to be adept at capturing dynamic, action-filled shots. Large weddings offer a chance for vibrant and lively photographs, showcasing the energy and excitement of your celebration. Expect your photographer to capture everything from the bustling dance floor to the emotional speeches, providing a comprehensive overview of your big day.
-
Group Photos
Group photos are a staple of large wedding photography. With a bigger guest list, organising these photos can be a bit more complex, but it’s worth it for the memories. Your photographer will often use a structured approach to get everyone together efficiently and ensure that all the important people are included.
Finding the Perfect Fit
Whether you’re looking for a small wedding photographer who can capture your intimate moments with a personal touch or a team of top-rated wedding photographers to handle a grand celebration, it’s essential to find someone who matches your vision and style. Here’s how to choose:
Review Portfolios: Look for examples of their previous work, especially photos from weddings of similar sizes. This will give you an idea of their ability to handle the specific needs of your wedding.
Discuss Your Vision: Share your ideas and expectations with potential photographers. Make sure they understand the atmosphere you want to create and how you envision your photos.
Check Reviews: Reading reviews from other couples can provide insight into the photographer’s professionalism and how they handle various wedding sizes.
Consider Packages: Compare small wedding photography packages and large wedding photography options to ensure you’re getting the coverage you need.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right photographer for your wedding is a big decision, and understanding the differences in photographing small versus large weddings can help you make an informed choice. Whether you’re planning an intimate celebration or a grand affair, the key is to find a photographer who aligns with your vision and can deliver beautiful, memorable photos. With the right approach and a bit of research, you’ll be well on your way to capturing every magical moment of your big day. Happy planning!
Ballyseede Castle Wedding: Emma & Greg
Romantic Castle Wedding.
Emma and Greg’s wedding at Ballyseede Castle was the epitome of an elegant and relaxed Irish celebration. Taking place on a warm and sunny September day, their special day perfectly captured the charm and grandeur of this iconic castle venue in Tralee, Co. Kerry.
A Fairytale Setting
Ballyseede Castle, a 4-star luxury hotel, is part of the Romantic Castles of Ireland Collection, alongside Markree Castle, Bellingham Castle, and Cabra Castle. Set on 30 acres of lush grounds, it offers a perfect backdrop for weddings. I’ve had the privilege of photographing weddings at all these remarkable venues, but Ballyseede always feels like stepping into a storybook.
Ceremony on the Castle Grounds
Emma and Greg chose The Belfry, the castle’s custom-built, church-style ceremony space, adorned with stunning floral arrangements by Every Occasion Florist. It was an intimate and heartfelt ceremony officiated by David, a Celebrant, Registered Solemniser, and Wedding Officiant.. For couples considering an outdoor option, Ballyseede also offers beautiful gardens perfect for al fresco vows.
A Relaxed and Joyful Celebration
The day was all about enjoying the company of family and friends. After a quick and stress-free photoshoot on the castle grounds, Emma and Greg joined their guests for a drinks reception in the elegant formal lounges and Orangery. This approach is ideal for couples wanting to maximize time with loved ones without compromising on capturing beautiful memories.
Fun, Laughter, and Dancing
The festivities continued with guests mingling on the terrace, soaking up the castle’s magical atmosphere before the evening celebrations began. We captured fun, candid shots of Emma, Greg, and their guests before the dance floor opened. The Wow Party Band delivered an incredible performance, setting the perfect tone for an unforgettable evening.
A Day to Remember

Finding Your Perfect Match: How to Choose Your Wedding Photography Style
Choosing the right photography style for your wedding is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your big day. Your wedding photos will be a lasting reminder of this special occasion, capturing the love, joy, and beauty of your celebration. With so many styles to choose from, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is right for you. Whether you’re drawn to candid wedding photography, artistic wedding photography, or something more traditional, this guide will help you make an informed decision.
Understanding Different Photography Styles
Let’s start by exploring some popular wedding photography styles to give you a better understanding of what each one offers.
-
Candid Wedding Photography
Candid wedding photography captures genuine, unposed moments as they happen. The best candid wedding photographers are masters at blending into the background, allowing you and your guests to enjoy the day without feeling like you’re constantly posing for the camera. This style is perfect for couples who want natural wedding pictures that reflect the true emotions and atmosphere of their wedding day.

-
Natural Wedding Photography
Similar to candid photography, natural wedding photography focuses on capturing real moments with minimal posing. However, it also incorporates beautiful wedding pictures that highlight the natural beauty of the setting, the couple, and the guests. A natural wedding photographer will use natural light and simple compositions to create stunning wedding photography that feels effortless and authentic.
-
Artistic Wedding Photography
If you’re looking for unique wedding photos that stand out, artistic wedding photography might be the style for you. Artistic wedding photographers use creative techniques, unusual angles, and dramatic lighting to produce beautiful, artsy images. This style is ideal for couples who want their wedding photos to be a work of art.

-
High-End Wedding Photography
High-end wedding photographers offer a luxurious experience and produce top-quality, beautiful wedding photos. They often provide a mix of styles, including candid, natural, and artistic shots, ensuring every moment is captured in the best possible way. If you want the best of the best, investing in a high-end wedding photographer can be worth every penny.

-
Relaxed Wedding Photography
Relaxed wedding photography is all about capturing the laid-back, joyful vibe of your wedding day. A relaxed wedding photographer will make you and your guests feel at ease, resulting in relaxed wedding photos that are full of genuine smiles and laughter. This style is perfect for couples who want their wedding photos to reflect the fun and happiness of their celebration.
-
Intimate Wedding Photography
For smaller, more personal weddings, intimate wedding photography is a great choice. An intimate wedding photographer focuses on capturing the close connections and emotional moments shared between the couple and their closest friends and family. This style often results in unique wedding photography that tells a heartfelt story.

How to Choose the Right Style for You
Now that you have an understanding of the different wedding photography styles, here are some tips to help you choose the one that’s right for you.
-
Consider Your Personal Style
Think about your personal style and what you want your wedding photos to say about you as a couple. Are you more traditional or modern? Do you prefer a natural look or something more artistic? Your wedding photography should reflect your personalities and the overall vibe of your wedding.
-
Look at Photographer Portfolios
Spend some time looking at portfolios from various photographers to see which style resonates with you. Pay attention to how they capture moments, their use of light, and the emotions in their photos. Whether you’re looking for trendy wedding photography or intimate wedding photography packages, seeing examples will help you determine what you like.
-
Meet with Potential Photographers
Meeting with potential photographers is crucial. It gives you a chance to see if you feel comfortable with them and if they understand your vision. Discuss your preferences, and ask them to show you examples of their work that align with the styles you’re considering. Whether you’re searching for a relaxed wedding photographer or quirky wedding photographers, personal interaction is key.
-
Read Reviews and Get Recommendations
Reading reviews and getting recommendations from friends and family can also help you find the best candid wedding photographers or artistic wedding photographers. Real experiences from other couples can give you insight into what to expect and ensure you’re making the right choice.
-
Consider Your Venue and Theme
Your wedding venue and theme can also influence your photography style. For example, a beach wedding might be perfect for natural photography, while a city wedding could lend itself well to artistic photography. Think about how the setting and theme will look in photos and choose a style that complements them.
Making Your Final Decision
Once you’ve done your research and considered your options, it’s time to make your final decision. Remember, the best wedding photographers will be able to capture the essence of your day, regardless of the style. Trust your instincts and choose a photographer whose work you love and who makes you feel comfortable.
Final Thoughts
Choosing your wedding photography style is an exciting part of planning your big day. Whether you’re drawn to candid wedding photography, artistic wedding photography, or any other style, the most important thing is that your photos reflect the love and joy of your celebration. With the right photographer, you’ll have beautiful wedding pictures that you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
Remember, your wedding photos are a lasting reminder of one of the most important days of your life. Take your time, do your research, and choose a style that truly represents you as a couple. Happy planning!

How to Choose the Ideal Wedding Photographer for Your Traditional or Non-Traditional Wedding
Choosing the right wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your big day. Your photographer will capture the memories you’ll cherish forever, so it’s crucial to find someone whose style matches your wedding theme and personal preferences. Whether you’re planning a traditional church ceremony, a vibrant Hindu celebration, or a modern, non-traditional wedding, this guide will help you pick and consult with the perfect photographer for your wedding in Ireland.
Understanding Different Wedding Photography Styles
Before you start reaching out to potential photographers, it’s helpful to understand the various wedding photography styles and how they might align with your wedding style. Here’s a rundown of some popular styles and how they can complement different types of weddings:
-
Traditional Wedding Photography
What It Is: Traditional wedding photography focuses on posed shots and classic compositions. It’s all about capturing the formal moments and important details of your day, like family portraits, group shots, and key ceremonies.
Best For: If you’re having a traditional Catholic wedding, Protestant ceremony, or any formal affair, this style will ensure that all the important moments are captured in a classic and timeless manner.
Consultation Tips: When consulting with a photographer for traditional wedding photography, discuss your timeline and specific shots you want to include. Make a list of family members and key guests to ensure everyone is covered in the photos.

-
Non-Traditional Wedding Photography
What It Is: Non-traditional wedding photography breaks away from the norm, focusing on candid shots, unique angles, and unconventional compositions. It’s all about capturing the personality and vibe of your wedding in a more relaxed and creative manner.
Best For: If you’re having a non-traditional wedding or a unique celebration, such as a fusion wedding or a themed event, this style will help capture the essence and quirks of your day.
Consultation Tips: Share your vision and any unique elements of your wedding with your photographer. Discuss any specific ideas or concepts you have in mind, and make sure they’re comfortable with unconventional shooting styles and settings.

-
Church Wedding Photography
What It Is: Church wedding photography focuses on capturing the spiritual and solemn moments of a traditional church ceremony. It often includes wide shots of the church interior, close-ups of the ceremony, and candid shots of the congregation.
Best For: For Christian, Catholic, or Protestant weddings held in a church, this style will ensure that the sacred and traditional aspects of the ceremony are beautifully documented.
Consultation Tips: Discuss any restrictions or guidelines the church might have regarding photography. Make sure your photographer is aware of the ceremony’s order and important moments to capture.
-
Muslim Wedding Photography
What It Is: Muslim wedding photography captures the unique traditions and ceremonies of a Muslim wedding, such as the Nikah ceremony, and the cultural and religious significance of the event. It often includes both posed and candid shots of the celebrations.
Best For: If you’re planning a Muslim wedding, this style will help ensure that the rich traditions and ceremonies are respectfully and beautifully captured.
Consultation Tips: Discuss the specific rituals and traditions of your wedding with your photographer. Ensure they are familiar with or willing to learn about the customs and are respectful of cultural sensitivities.
-
Hindu Wedding Photography
What It Is: Hindu wedding photography captures the vibrant and intricate ceremonies of a Hindu wedding, including the traditional rituals, colourful attire, and elaborate decorations. It often involves both posed and candid shots to capture the essence of the celebrations.
Best For: For a Hindu wedding, this style will beautifully document the cultural richness and vibrant traditions of your ceremony and celebrations.
Consultation Tips: Share the detailed schedule of your wedding rituals and any specific cultural elements you want to highlight. Ensure your photographer is familiar with or open to learning about Hindu wedding traditions.
How to Choose the Right Photographer
With a clear understanding of the photography styles and how they align with your wedding, here’s how to choose the perfect photographer for your big day:
- Research and Shortlist
Start by researching photographers who specialise in the style that suits your wedding. Look at their portfolios, read reviews, and make a shortlist of those whose work resonates with you. In Ireland, consider reaching out to well-reviewed wedding photographers in major cities like Dublin, Galway, Cork, and Limerick.
- Check Experience and Specialisation
Ensure that the photographers you’re considering have experience in your specific type of wedding. For example, if you’re having a church wedding, look for someone with a portfolio that includes church ceremonies. Similarly, if you’re planning a Hindu or Muslim wedding, find a photographer familiar with those cultural traditions.
- Discuss Your Vision
Arrange consultations with your shortlisted photographers. Share your vision for the wedding, including any specific styles or shots you want. Discuss the key moments you want captured and any unique elements of your wedding. This will help you gauge whether the photographer understands and aligns with your vision.
- Review Packages and Pricing
Wedding photography packages can vary widely in terms of what’s included, so review the details carefully. Make sure the package covers all the aspects you’re interested in, such as the number of hours of coverage, the inclusion of a second photographer, and the delivery of digital images or prints.
- Ask About Their Process
Understand the photographer’s process, including how they handle post-production, editing, and delivery of the final photos. Ask about their approach to capturing candid moments versus posed shots, and how they handle different lighting and settings.
- Check References
If you’re happy with what you’ve seen and heard, ask for references from previous clients. This can give you valuable insights into the photographer’s reliability, professionalism, and ability to work in different settings.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right photographer for your wedding is about finding someone whose style matches your vision and who understands the unique aspects of your celebration. Whether you’re planning a traditional church wedding, a vibrant Hindu ceremony, or a modern, non-traditional event, the right photographer will capture your day beautifully and authentically.
By researching your options, consulting with potential photographers, and clearly communicating your needs, you’ll find someone who can turn your wedding day into a collection of timeless, cherished memories. Good luck with your wedding planning, and here’s to capturing every magical moment of your special day!
